Today I'm bringing you a different type of post to what I usually do. I've been wanting to do this for a while, but i've never quite known how to go about it. Although this blog began as a sort've illustrative self growth journey and has now become more clothing orientated, I still want to keep the personal aspect I started with, after all my style is very personal to me!
This is a post about self love.
In the past three years, a lot has changed. I've had my up's and my fair share of down's. And I don't regret any of it for a second. In my darkest moments, I never, ever thought I would at some point look back and smile. Life isn't perfect, no, but it is beautiful. I'm surrounded with positive loving people who encourage me to be my best, who love me even when i'm too tired to love myself.
Which brings me to my main point. Ladies and gentlemen. If you do anything in life, please let learning to love yourself fiercely and unapologetically be one of the first things you do. If you don't love yourself who will love you? I learned that the hard way. Cherish what you consider flaws, the scratch on your cheek you got as a child, the freckles you don't like, the hair you think is too frizzy, embrace it, because it is who you are.
For too long I was filled with self loathing. A mixture of self esteem issues and cutting comments from people I once held dear to my heart left me in a spiral of deep sadness and just utter exhaustion of being... me I guess. It took some time to understand that I am me and nothing about that will ever change. So I took time out and re-moulded myself. It was hard, and i'm not completely there, but I'm getting there and that in itself is such a wonderful thing.
"The power of love
A force from above
Cleaning my soul
Flame on burn desire
Love with tongues of fire
Purge the soul
Make love your goal"
A force from above
Cleaning my soul
Flame on burn desire
Love with tongues of fire
Purge the soul
Make love your goal"
Yin and Yang. There is goodness in the bad. And sometimes bad in the goodness.

Wonderful post and pictures! I think self-love is a life long journey. Most days I do love who I am and who I'm becoming, but of course there are those days when I wish I could be better, smarter, thinner, write more, etc. So everyday I try and most of the time succeed in loving who I am fiercely! So thanks for reminding me of this!
ReplyDeleteP.S. -- love your ring!

Hi Sade!
ReplyDeleteYour comment on my blog made my day! Thanks! This post is great -- the delicate detail of your top and the heartfelt text about your outlook on life. The hard times, IMO, are what make you hardworking, beautiful and ultimately successful and happy.

ReplyDeleteAhhh. The power of love indeed.
ReplyDeleteHaving mercilessly battled & slaughtered myself over the years, I can relate.
Not there yet, just as you rightly pointed out...looking back, it was hard, no joke, but just like you I can also smile!
"Unapologetically" is the right word. There gets to a point that it's not about not caring, it's that you just can't anymore. I'm at that point right now.
I've accepted me, and as long as I'm true to me, then I'm great to go!
Bravo on your journey so far dear!

I'm sorry you had to go through those difficult times! But hindsight is a beautiful thing and you can now look back with understanding I guess. It's so important to learn to love yourself and something I have and still do struggle with. It always amuses me when I think about learning to love myself, like I should already just love myself and not have to LEARN how to. Like it should be second nature to all of us but it's not which is sad. It takes effort and time but I think it's one of the most important lessons to learn in life.
ReplyDeleteI want to leave you with one of my fave quotes ever that I try and remember when I feel a bit 'meh' about myself: 'Accept everything about yourself - I mean everything, You are you and that is the beginning and the end - no apologies, no regrets.'
